Dennis “Spider” Clay Smith, a skilled craftsman and beloved brother, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 3, 2026, at Franklin Health & Rehab in Franklin County, Virginia. He was 61 years old.
Born on July 24, 1964, in Franklin County, Dennis spent his life in the community he loved, building connections and leaving a legacy of hard work and quiet integrity. Throughout his career with S & H Concrete Foundations Inc., Dennis was known by colleagues and friends as “Spider,” a testament to his agility, dedication, and expert workmanship. His skill in the laying of concrete foundations made him not only a valued employee but also a respected figure in local construction circles. Those who worked alongside Dennis remember him for his unwavering reliability and the pride he took in every project.
Dennis was preceded in death by his loving parents, Clarence and Melva Smith (née Dillon), as well as his siblings, Kay Mitchell and Andrew, and his niece, Shannon Manning. Their cherished memories and family traditions are woven into the fabric of Dennis’s own journey.
He is survived by his brothers: Johnnie (and wife Wendy), Kenneth, Buster (and wife Pam), and Stanley (and wife Alice), and by his sisters Becky Roberts (with husband Cliff), Curly Manning (with husband Dennis), and Sandra Greer (with husband Roger). Dennis also leaves behind his special niece, Laura Leigh Smith, as well as many other nieces and nephews who were touched by his kindness, gentle humor, and steadfast support.
The family expresses heartfelt appreciation to all the nurses and doctors at Franklin Health and Rehabilitation Center who provided care and comfort to Dennis during his final days. Their compassion did not go unnoticed and will be long remembered in gratitude.
To honor Dennis’s final wishes, his service will remain private. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Conner-Bowman Funeral Home & Crematory, Rocky Mount, Virginia.
Dennis “Spider” Clay Smith’s legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him—his family, his friends, and all who had the privilege of sharing in his journey.
