Edgar W. "Ed" Croom

Edgar Washington (Ed) Croom, Jr. age 89 of Moneta joined his Heavenly family on Saturday, November 17, 2018. Ed attended schools in North Carolina and Virginia where he earned his BS Degree. He was associated in the automotive industry in management most of his life. He served in the United States Army Reserves as a Master Seargent in Europe and Korea, he was a forward observer for heavy weapons in the Seventh Infantry Division and was decorated for his outstanding service in combat, he was wounded twice and detained by the enemy for a brief period of time where he escaped from his captors, only by the Grace of God! Ed was known as an American Hero and was the recipient of many medals including the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Combat Infantry Badge among others. He was a Shriner and Mason, and a member of many other organizations and a very active member of Halesford Baptist Church in Wirtz, Virginia. Ed was born on September 27, 1929 a son of the late Edgar and Gertrude Civils Croom; brother, Bennie Croom and sisters, Mildred Pasquinelli, Ramona Croom, Beatrice Croom and Fanice Butler. He was also preceded in death by the love of his life, Gerry Rowe Croom; son, Tony Croom, brothers-in-law, Bill, Fred and Mike Rowe. He is survived by his son, Tracy W. Croom, Moneta; four grandchildren; sister, Mary Croom McCrickard of Suffolk, VA; and numerous nieces, nephews, other family members and friends. A memorial service celebrating Ed’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 27, 2018 at Halesford Baptist Church with Pastor Melvin Harris officiating. A memorial dinner will be held in the Family Life Center following the service. The Croom Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service beginning at 10 a.m. at the church In lieu of flowers the family request that memorial gifts be made to Halesford Baptist Church 2485 Lost Mountain Road Wirtz, VA 24184 or to the charity of your choice.
