Gaynor Alderman Mason

Gaynor Renva Alderman Mason formerly of Martinsville passed away on Thursday, November 1, 2018. She was the daughter of the late Dewey Albert and Vada Weddle Alderman of Floyd County, VA and also preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, William Ashley Mason; sister, Catherine Alderman; brother, Wayne G. Alderman; son-in-law, Paul Wesley Burnette; special aunt, Effie Gae Weddle; and a special friend, Carl R. Brown; and faithful pet, Lucky. Surviving are her daughter, Melanie Mason Burnette; her grandson Matthew Mason Burnette, both of Roanoke; nephew, Gary Lowell Alderman, Emporia, VA; niece, Ginger Michelle Alderman; great-niece Sybil Barrett and her son, Griffin, all of Roanoke. She is also survived by many cherished cousins and friends, near and far. Gaynor attended Radford State Teachers College where she was in the Choral Club and the May Court. She was an assistant librarian in Floyd County and continued to attend summer school at the College of William and Mary. While teaching she earned a scholarship to Priscilla Beach Theatre in Plymouth, MA. For a time, she did secretarial work with Burch Hodges Stone, Roy Stone Transfer and Virginia-Carolina Freight, later becoming a homemaker and engaging in club work. She has been active in Beta Sigma Phi since 1948, serving in local and state offices. She was a past-president of the Martinsville-Henry Co. Woman’s Club, active for 25 years and participated in the publishing of the “Pictorial History of Martinsville and Henry County”. She was past-president of Flower View Garden Club and an active member of Piedmont Arts Guild. Gaynor was brought up in the Church of the Brethren faith, having been baptized at Burks Fork Church in Floyd County. She was a member of Broad Street Christian Church in Martinsville where she was in the Chancel Choir, Women’s Christian Fellowship and the Flower Guild. She was also a member of the Jubalite Choir at the First Baptist Church and the Senior Choir at King’s Grant. In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorials be made to Broad Street Christian Church, 106 Broad St, Martinsville, VA 24112 or Martinsville-Henry County S.P.C.A., 132 Joseph Martin Hwy, Martinsville, VA 24112. A celebration of her life will held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, November 5, 2018 at Conner-Bowman Funeral Home with the Rev. Mark B. Parkinson officiating. Interment will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park in Salem. Her family will receive friends on Monday prior to the service beginning at 11:30 until service time.
