George H. "Buck" Wood, Jr.

George H. “Buck” Wood, Jr. age 85 of Boones Mill and formerly of Salem, VA passed away on Tuesday, February 4, 2020. He was born on December 5, 1934 a son of the late George H., Sr. and Mary Mitchell Wood and was also preceded in death by his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Earl and Louise Batten. Buck was a graduate of Andrew Lewis High School, attended Roanoke College and Graduated Medical College of Virginia in 1957. He served in the National Guard and was a member of NRA, Taylor Masonic Lodge (Salem) and Isaac Masonic Lodge (Boones Mill) and the Gideons International. He also assisted in the founding of the Boones Mill Rescue Squad. Buck was the Owner and Pharmacist of Wood’s Pharmacy (The Medicine Shoppe) in Boones Mill having semi-retired in 2000 and was an active member of Boones Mill Baptist Church having served as a Sunday School Teacher and Deacon. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Wood; daughter, Leigh W. Linnane (Pete); son, Tracy B. Wood (Barbara); grandchildren, Chris Hurd (Carrie), Cody Wood and Kayla Wood; his great-grandchildren, Logan, McKenna Hurd and Luke Hurd; and his special canine companion, “Jac”. A celebration of Buck’s life will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Thursday, February 20, 2020 at Boones Mill Baptist Church with Pastors James H. Steele and Bob Greene officiating.
