Helen “Sue” Maxey Preston, lovingly known as "Nanny" by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, 76, of Rocky Mount, Virginia, passed away on July 30, 2026, at Lewis Gale Medical Center in Roanoke, Virginia, surrounded by her loving family. Sue was born on February 27, 1950, in Callaway, Virginia, to William Coy “Brother” Maxey and Abbie Victoria Gearheart Maxey. Sue loved her family fiercely and found great joy in caring for them. She was known for her kind heart and generous spirit. A beautician by trade, she was also deeply creative and had a special talent for making beautiful wreaths and flower arrangements. She enjoyed gardening and took pride in growing beautiful flowers. She loved searching for treasures at thrift shops and yard sales. Sue was an amazing cook who loved preparing meals for her family and those she loved, always making sure no one left her table hungry or without a smile. She is survived by her children, Albert William Preston (Erica), Deborah Sue Akers (Chad), and Stephen Scott Preston (Shannon); her grandchildren, Amber Pope (Jonas), Gunnar Preston, Skylar Akers (Kayleigh), Landon Akers, Adam Preston, and Luke Preston; her great-grandchildren, JoJo, Alyssa, and Teagan; her siblings, Dolly (Margaret) and Beatrice (Charles); her sisters-in-law, June and Linda; and her former husband, Gary Stephen Preston. Sue was preceded in death by her parents, William Coy “Brother” Maxey and Abbie Victoria Gearheart Maxey; and her siblings, Bobbie (Ruth), Wade (Florence), Edward (Nell), Harold ( Christine), Coy (Ann), Shirley, Russell (Dot), Gene, Garry, Johnny (Florance), and Judy (Dave). In accordance with Sue’s wishes, she will be cremated. A private celebration of her life will be held at a later date for family and close friends. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered for her love, kindness, and the many beautiful ways she touched the lives of those around her.
