James Carlyle Craighead

James Carlyle Craighead entered his Heavenly home on May 17, 2024, surrounded by his family. James was preceded in death by his parents Ralph and Trudy Craighead and his siblings, Everett Craighead, Linda Craighead and Carol Hodges.

Born December 7, 1942, James followed his father's footsteps and became a builder. From homes to businesses, James led many construction projects throughout Franklin County and surrounding areas. His passion for building also led to the addition of a new sanctuary and remodel of Monte Vista Church in 1988, where James was a member and served for many years in several capacities.

James was also talented in building relationships. He enjoyed visiting with others, especially on his golf cart, and sharing a good laugh. His jovial spirit would light up any place he visited.

He instilled this joy, along with devotion, and a strong work ethic into those who are left to cherish his memory. Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Lilly Hardy Craighead; along with sons, Tim (Rissa) Craighead and Chris (Vicki) Craighead. Papa James enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren: Danielle (Joel) Brubaker, Christa (Chinmay) Craighead-Katke, Isaiah Craighead (Maggie English), Cory Craighead (Sadie Sheppard), Matthew Craighead (Emma Wooldridge). He also leaves behind great-grandchildren, Quentin and Wyatt Brubaker, and Isla Craighead. Additionally he is survived by one brother, Gene (Joy) Craighead, brother-in-law Marshall Hodges, sisters-in-law Earline (Eldridge) Altice, Lois Carr, and Pat Craighead, along with many beloved nieces and nephews.

We rejoice in knowing James is healed and assured by Revelation 21:1-4: He will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself will be with them; He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning nor crying nor pain any more, for the former things have passed away.

Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at Monte Vista Church with Pastor Gina Wright-Hawkins officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. His family will be receiving friends from 9:00-11:00 a.m. prior to the service Wednesday morning at the church.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Monte Vista Church of the Brethren (25 Wades Gap Road, Callaway, VA 24067) in memory of James.

The family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to the Franklin Carilion Hospice Team, and to the loving and caring nurses, especially Susan. Throughout James' time of extended care, the family is also appreciative of the many thoughts and prayers extended. We have felt God's presence surrounding us during this time.
