Jean Mitchell

Jean Mitchell age 89 of Penhook passed away on Sunday, April 23, 2023 in Spring Tree Health and Rehabilitation Center in Roanoke.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Alphonso B. and Locky Pearl David Mitchell; Sisters, Ada M. Spender, Angie M. Gose, and Georgie M. Angle; Brothers, David B. Mitchell and Herbert A. Mitchell; niece, Barbara Jean Spender Jones.

She is survived by her family members, Frances M. Holland, Sister; William E. Spender, Nephew (Herminea), James L. Spender, Nephew (Lynn), Frances Gose Young, Neice, Gaynell Angle Krista, Neice (John), Garry W. Angle, Nephew (Barbara), Darryl C. Holland, Newphew, Vicki R.  Holland, Neice; Many great-nieces and great-nephews.

Jean was the youngest child of seven in Penhook, VA, on August 17, 1933, born to Alphonso B. and Locky Pearl David Mitchell.  She attended Radford College 1956-1957.  She moved to Martinsville, VA, after graduation from Radford and worked at Piedmont Trust Bank for approximately five years.  She worked at E.I. DuPont, Martinsville, for about 30 years and was a Supervisor when she retired.  She moved back to the family farm in 1992 to help her brother operate the beef farm, which she dearly loved.  Her parents’ farm was a large part of who she truly was.  As a true patriot of America, Jean enjoyed being involved in the election process by working the polls for many years.  Jean always loved the Martinsville Speedway and sold tickets there for many years on raceday.  Jean was close to her family and Penhook neighbors and friends at E.I. DuPont.  She loved her cats and dogs and flowers. 

Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 PM Monday, May 1, 2023 at Conner-Bowman Funeral Home with Pastor Rick Poland officiating. Interment will follow in Franklin Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service beginning at 1 PM at the funeral home.
