Jonell Patsel Black, age 87 of Hardy, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, April 14, 2021. She was born August 11, 1933 to the late Elmer Ralph “Pete” Patsel and Winnie Blosser Patsel. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband James Oakley Black; sons Ronald Wayne Hannah and Thomas Eugene Hannah; sister Sandra King; brother Ralph Patsel; and great-granddaughter Maddison Fink. Jonell was a member of Red Valley United Methodist Church. She was a very strong woman and very active in the church. She graduated high school with three small children and worked to put all of them into college. She took correspondence classes to work for and eventually retire from the Veterans Administration. She had a positive outlook on life and always went above and beyond to help others.
Surviving is her daughter BJ HannahWatkins; sister Audrey Thrasher; brothers-in-law John Thrasher and Wayne Black; grandchildren Ronald Wayne Hannah, Jr., his wife Nancy Pearl Hannah; four great-grandchildren Autumn Hannah, Kieley Hannah, Braylon Mello, and Gracie Hannah; three step great-grandchildren Jasper Joseph, Summer Louise, and Nicole Joyce; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Red Valley United Methodist Church or the Alzheimer’s Association.
Funeral services will be conducted from 11:00 a.m. Wednesday with Pastor Jae Song officiating. Her family will be receiving friends two hours prior to the service beginning at nine Wednesday at Red Valley United Methodist Church. Due to Covid restrictions, fellowship will be held at the home of BJ Watkins, 126 Trouble Creek Lane, Wirtz, VA following the service.
