Joyce Boone Poland of Penhook, Virginia and formerly of Ashburn, Virginia peacefully passed away and went to be with our Lord on July 2, 2026 surrounded by family.
Joyce was born on March 15, 1933, in Ronceverte, West Virginia to Lee Henderson and Elizabeth Alice Boone. She graduated at 16 years old from Eagle Rock High School and moved to Ashburn, Virginia where she worked for Thompson Dairy in Washington, D.C.
She retired in 1987 as a secretary at Broad Run High School in Ashburn. She truly enjoyed working with the students as she said they kept her feeling young and she was seen as a mother to many young teachers.
On June 11, 1954, she married the love of her life, Winfred Wilson (Sonny) Poland Jr. They built a home that was always open to all if they needed a meal or a place to stay.
Joyce had a rotation of visitors and worked hard to make everyone feel at home. She loved planning events throughout the year to entertain and host whoever came through her doors, especially during the holidays. One of her favorite times at
Broad Run was the monthly dinner with close friends of the Old Biddy Committee. She enjoyed reading, cooking, baking and making candy for family and friends, cheering on her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren through every success, no matter how small.
Joyce was an active member of the Ashburn Presbyterian Church and the Penhook United Methodist Church. She volunteered in numerous ministries and formed lifelong friendships. She will be remembered for her joy of life, her wit, wisdom and humor, and her generous spirit but mostly for the love she gave without limits.
She is survived by her sons Randy (Anne) Poland and Ricky (Sarah) Poland, her beloved grandchildren, Kirsten (Sean), Caitlin (Charlie), Cory, Chris (Lois), Stefani (Charlie), Danielle, and Lydia; her brothers Ron (Marsha) Boone and Don (Becky) Boone, her 12 great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, cousins, dear friends and countless others that were made to feel like family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Sonny, brothers Albert and Lee, sister Hazel, and grandson Ted.
The burial will be at 12:00 p.m. at Mountain View Memorial Park, Boones Mill, Virginia on Saturday, July 11 followed by a Celebration of Life held at 2:00 p.m. at Penhook Fellowship Church (formerely Penhook United Methodist Church). The family will receive friends following the service to share memories, food and fellowship.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Joyce’s memory to The Penhook Fellowship Church breakfast fund or to Stepping Stone Mission in Rocky Mount, VA. Joyce also supported the Gideon’s International, Boys Town, Salvation Army, and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital with annual donations.
