Marie Montgomery Chitwood

Mae Marie Montgomery Chitwood, age 91, of Rocky Mount, passed away on Tuesday March 17, 2026, and went to be with her Lord and Savior. She was born on February 24, 1935, a daughter of the late Alfred and Ethel Montgomery. She was also preceded in death by her husband, James E. “Peanut” Chitwood; brothers and sisters-in-law Cornell Montgomery (Louise), L.T. Montgomery (Patsy), Eugene Montgomery (Lois); and grandson Chance Young.

Marie was a graduate of Franklin County High School and played on the basketball team. Marie will be well-remembered for her love of family, having been born the fourth of nine children on a farm in the Boones Mill area. Marie had a tremendous love of flowers, and she grew many varieties including red canna lilies, azaleas and roses that she shared with her community. She loved animals, especially her cats, and birds (particularly red birds), and nature in general. She was also a wonderful cook and shared many of her special recipes with those she loved – especially lemon meringue pies and coconut cakes. Marie also loved all genres of music, and she loved to dance.

Even though she endured many trials and hardships in her life, she persevered through them all. She will never be forgotten, and her spirit will live on forever.

Daughter Debbie (Jerry Prillaman); Debbie’s children – Chad Young (Lauren); g’children – Brennan, Rylan, and Preston Young; Ramsey Lynn and Mason Young, and their mother Mandi Young.

Daughter Vickie Hall (Fred); g’children – Jessica Lynn Holland; great g’child Lucas Holland; Jody Hall, g’children Hayden, Ainslee, and Amaya Hall; Shannon Hall (Mandy); g’children Bryan and Sydney Hall

Son Greg Chitwood and special friend Darlene Cogburn

Funeral services will be conducted 1 PM Tuesday, March 24, 2026, at Conner-Bowman Funeral Home with Dr. J. D. Harmon officiating. Interment will follow in Franklin Memorial Park. Friends may call after 9 AM Tuesday, March 24th with the family receiving friends from 12 Noon until 1PM (one hour prior to the service).
