Mattie Collins Wright

Mattie Collins Wright, 70, of Penhook, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, October 1, 2026, after a long and valiant battle with her health. In this time of parting, her loved ones find comfort in knowing she will be reunited with her beloved husband, Coy Sam Wright, who preceded her in death in 2022.

Mattie was a deeply loved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend whose presence brought warmth to those around her. She will be forever remembered not only for the love she gave so freely, but also for the simple, special ways she cared for her family. Her fantastic potato salad and her amazing sausage gravy were second to none, and those cherished meals will remain a lasting part of the memories shared by all who knew her.

Her family was the center of her life. She was the dearly loved mother of Melissa Smith and her husband, Jason, and Rachel Mellott and her husband, Walter. Nothing brought Mattie greater joy than being “Granny.” Her grandchildren were her life: Anthony Smith, Cory Smith, Ryan Smith and Nevaeh, and Dakota Mellott. Each of them held a special place in her heart, and all of them meant the world to her.

She will also be sadly missed by her sisters, Mary Alice Dickson and Brenda Overton, and by her brothers, Johnny Collins and Bo Collins and his wife, Daffy. Mattie was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Rachel Collins, and by her brother, Jesse. She was also preceded in death by her brothers-in-law Bruce Overton and Coy Sam Wright, and by Johnny Collins’ wife, Tiny.

Mattie’s memory will live on in the love of her family, in the comfort of home-cooked meals shared around the table, and in the many moments of laughter, devotion, and care that defined her life.

In keeping with Mattie’s wishes, cremation will follow. Her final arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Conner-Bowman Funeral Home and Crematory, 62 Virginia Market Place Drive, Rocky Mount, Virginia 24151.
