Sandra Lucas Curd

Sandra Lucas Curd, lovingly known as "Sandy," of Rocky Mount, Virginia, passed away peacefully at home on July 2, 2025, surrounded by her devoted family after a long and courageous battle with lung cancer.

Sandy was a woman of grace, beauty, and generosity, whose radiant spirit touched everyone she met. Born on February 5, 1937, she was the daughter of the late Andrew Day and Wilma Frances Lucas.

She graduated from Andrew Lewis High School, where she was an enthusiastic member of the Spirit Club, Latin Club, Young Y Teens, the marching band, and served as head majorette her senior year. She later attended Radford University and proudly earned her degree from Roanoke College in 1984.

Sandy shared a deep and devoted love with her husband, Dr. Louis B. Curd, with whom she worked side by side in his Optometry practice for fifteen years. After his passing in 1977, Sandy followed a new path and returned to Roanoke College for a degree in elementary education. She went on to teach fourth grade at Dudley Elementary School for fifteen years, where she was beloved by students, families, and colleagues. Her passion for teaching and her nurturing spirit left a lasting impact on many, and she was honored as Franklin County's Teacher of the Year.

Sandy's life was rooted in her strong Christian faith. She was a longtime member and volunteer at Franklin Heights Baptist Church, where she served with love and humility.

She was preceded in death by her devoted husband Dr. Louis B. Curd; her cherished parents; her beloved sisters and best friends, Jean L. Krippendorf, and Linda Lucas Roberts Smither; two dear nephews, Thomas Matthew Krippendorf and John Lucas Krippendorf and her stepson, Louis B. Curd II.

She is survived by her stepdaughter Diane Strickler of Roanoke, VA, and her loving nieces: Marla Roberts Allara (Jack) of Roanoke, VA; Marsha Krippendorf Southee (Earl) of Alexandria, VA; Mary Krippendorf Keene (Greg) of Roanoke, VA; and Molly Krippendorf May of Raleigh, NC. She is also survived by her devoted nephews: Carl Frederick Krippendorf (Mary) of Virginia Beach, VA; and Berkley Ray Roberts (Denise) of Salem, VA. Sandy held a special place in each of their hearts and played an important and enduring role in their lives.

A graveside service in celebration of Sandy's life will be held at Wilson Cemetery in Check, Virginia at 11:00 AM on Friday, July 11, 2025 with Pastor Stan Parris officiating.

The Allara family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to Krista, Carmelita, and the compassionate team at Amedisys Hospice Care for their exceptional care, support, and kindness during Sandy's final days.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Sandy's memory to Franklin Heights Baptist Church in Rocky Mount, Virginia.

Sandy's life was a testament to love, service, and strength. She leaves behind a legacy of kindness, faith, and joy that will continue to shine through all those who knew and loved her.
