Let There Be Flowers
Wanda Gail Foster Green, Age 67 of Glade Hill went to be with the Lord on August 29th after a decade long battle with Cortical Basal Degeneration. She did many things in her life, but she will be remembered as the owner and operator of Foster’s Greenhouse and Country Market for 27 years.
Wanda LOVED flowers and antiques. She sold a unique mixture of the two and was known far and wide for her unique arrangements, garden décor and customer service. She never met a stranger and the only thing she loved more than plants and flowers were her customers. Wanda poured her heart into her business and she believed in selling only the highest quality plants for all her customers. Her enthusiasm was unmatched. Everyone knew her by her big smile and wonderful laugh. She was diligent in giving growing tips to her customers so they would get the most enjoyment from their plants.
Wanda also served on the Rocky Mount Downtown Revitalization Committee and was instrumental in plant selection and design. She also gave presentations on gardening for local garden clubs and the Master Gardeners. Wanda and her crew provided flowers for churches as well as custom arrangements for funerals and weddings. They even made hundreds of fresh Christmas wreaths every year for cemeteries as well as their other customers.
Wanda especially loved working with groups of school children from pre-school to high school who came on field trips to her greenhouse. She made sure they all got to plant a flower in a pot. Afterwards they usually got a free treat at the Country Market. Her business was a true family business. This included her father, mother, sister, niece, aunt and husband as well as numerous great employees.
Wanda retired at the end of 2017 because by then her illness was affecting her speech so much, she was afraid her customers might mistake her disability for something else. She never got to give her customers a proper goodbye which devastated her, but her personal life was private.
She was preceded in death by her father, William (Bill) Foster, who ran the Country Market. She is survived by her mother, Nancy Dillon Foster, her sister/best friend, Connie and her husband James White. One niece Alex Mohler and her partner Sammy Brookes, as well as numerous aunts, cousins and her cat “Cleo”. Wanda is also survived by her husband, Rick who was has been her companion for 26 years and her primary care giver for the last several years.
Also dear to her are her full-time care givers: Sara Mayhorn, Cricket Hale, Tammy Mullins and Lisa Miller, who helped Rick care for Wanda for the last few years. They were more like sisters than caregivers. A very special thanks goes to her long-time employee and “adopted” sister, Cindy Smith who was her right hand in the Greenhouse operation.
Special mention goes out to the Carilion Hospice team who worked with Wanda in last four months of her life. They are truly “Angels of Earth”
