Mel A Lofurno

February 4, 1942 - March 11, 2022

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of a wonderful man, Mel A. Lofurno, age 80, of Hardy, VA, who left us to be with the Lord on March 11, 2022. The son of Frank and Ruth Lofurno, Mel was born in Norfolk, VA in 1942. He graduated from Virginia Tech with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1965. Upon graduation, he was employed by the DuPont Company at their Spruance Film site in Richmond, VA. He soon moved on to numerous positions in Sales and Marketing, Management and Product Development involving coatings, adhesives, and Semi-Conductor materials for which he holds several patents. In 1991, Mel chose early retirement from DuPont in Wilmington, DE after 26 years. In 1992, he was hired by a former DuPont customer, a German company, Degussa Corporation in New Jersey. This took Mel and Sue to Germany for three years where he served as Global Business Director for Precious Metals for the Degussa Corporation. Upon returning to the US, he left Degussa and in 2000, started Lofurno Corporation, a Business Management Consulting Company. He very much enjoyed having his own business and working with his many interesting and varied clients. In 2008, Mel and Sue moved from New Jersey to beautiful Smith Mountain Lake. Mel absolutely loved his life here, and his many wonderful and interesting friends. Mel is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Suzanne Cavanaugh Lofurno and their two amazing sons; Michael Brian (Sandy) of Signal Mountain, TN and Alan Keith (Judith) of Greer, SC, his five precious grandchildren who were the joy of his life and of whom he was/is so proud: Jeffrey, Elizabeth, Cooper, Alex and Chase; brothers Frank and Mike and sister Beth Sobota and numerous nephews and nieces. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Andrews Catholic Church in Roanoke, VA on Thursday, March 24, 2022 at 12 pm (noon). Address is 631 North Jefferson St., Roanoke, VA 24016. In lieu of flowers, if one wishes, a memorial donation may be made to: Good Samaritan Hospice, 2408 Electric Road, Roanoke, VA 24018. Or, online at https://goodsam.care/giving/ They were all such a wonderful help during Mel’s last two months of fighting his three year battle with cancer. We, the family, are extremely grateful to them.
